Equisetum hyemale (Dutch rush)

Equisetum hyemale, commonly known as rough horsetail or scouring rush, is a tall, clump-forming perennial with stiff, jointed green stems that grow in dense, upright clusters from damp soil or shallow water. It produces inconspicuous, spore-bearing cones in early summer, providing subtle texture rather than showy blooms.

This species is valued for wetland biodiversity and erosion control, offering shelter for small wildlife and stabilising pond margins. Its striking, upright habit and tolerance of consistently wet or waterlogged conditions make it ideal for pond edges, streamsides, and damp garden areas.
