A handwoven Tonga winnowing basket from Zimbabwe

These solid-edged baskets are the pinnacle of the basket-maker’s art in Zimbabwe. Each begins as a woven square and is worked into an almost perfect circle — a form still used to winnow grain today. They’re affectionately known as “grandmother baskets”, as fewer younger weavers are learning the craft.

This colourful range carries a lovely sustainability story too: the weavers work strands of discarded plastic into the weave, giving each basket its vivid colour while keeping waste out of landfill.

Handmade, so each varies by a centimetre or two — part of its charm. Beautiful as wall art, on its own or in a cluster.
