ABOUT THE ARTIST
Niall Julian has been a petrolhead for as long as he can remember. Cars, in particular classics, have always held a deep fascination, which has over the years combined with his background in photography, film and digital media. All of these came together in 2015 when Niall founded the award-winning classic car blog Take to the Road. Since then the site has grown to become one of the UK’s leading automotive blogs. As a freelance photojournalist, Niall attends many of the UK’s top Concours shows, always with a camera in hand.

ABOUT THIS COMMISSION
The C6 Laboratoire was built using aluminium alloy wherever possible, created in the shape of an aircraft wing. If a car is simply shaped like this, however, it will have a tendency to lift at high speed. The French coachbuilder appears to have understood this and so the front of the car is shaped to generate downforce by directing air upwards. This had the effect of creating a low-pressure area under the car helping to keep it from any tendency to lift.

Similarly, the rear treatment of the car has a wing-like shape to nicely close out the airflow at the rear but has a slightly upswept under-section which enhances the creation of a low-pressure area under the car. The car might be fabricated from flat sheet aluminium alloy but the aerodynamics were superbly thought-out. Voisin and Lefevbre had in fact created what might be thought of as the first rudimentary ground effect Grand Prix racing car.
