A beautiful Benin bronze sculpture, made by the Edo people of the Benin Kingdom in Nigeria. Benin bronzes were historically used in West Africa as a form of currency and status, their value lying in both the metal and the ornamentation worked into each piece.
Each is cast using the lost-wax method: a wax model is covered in clay, then heated to set the clay and melt the wax, before molten metal is poured into the mould. Once cooled, the clay is chipped away to reveal the bronze — meaning every piece is unique.
