Equisetum fluviatile

Equisetum fluviatile, commonly known as water horsetail, is a striking native marginal with upright, hollow green stems marked by dark bands at each joint. The vertical growth creates a bold architectural effect, making it particularly effective in modern pond designs or naturalistic wetland planting.

It thrives in full sun to partial shade in shallow water or permanently wet soil and can spread steadily by rhizomes. The dense stands provide shelter for amphibians and aquatic invertebrates, while also helping to stabilise pond margins and improve habitat structure.
