A handwoven basket from the Iringa region of Tanzania, East Africa. Iringa baskets are woven from Milulu, a reed-like swamp grass, and have long been an everyday utility item of the Hehe people, whose southern highlands have a deep history of basketry.
Each basket is hand-woven by a female artisan over roughly seven days. The Milulu grass is harvested along certain rivers, carried back to the village, then sun-dried before weaving, with the traditional ochre patterns intertwined by hand. The artisans work from their own homes and communities and are paid fairly, with the maker group also providing business training, design advice and skills workshops.
A natural, undyed basket — lovely for storage, as a plant-pot cover, or simply on display. As a handmade piece, each is unique.
Size: approx. 40 × 40cm. As each basket is handmade, sizes vary by roughly 10%.
