These figures are made by the Kota people from Mahingwe in Gabon and used in ceremonies. Sculpted from wood the facial part of the sculpture is adorned with brass/copper strips and almost resembles the head of a Cobra snake which is referred to by Europeans as the “naja”.
Renowned artists such as Pablo Picaso, Fernand Leger, Paul Klee, Alfred Stieglitz, Alberto Giacometti and Ernest Mancoba drew inspiration in the early 20th century from Kota art. These abstract figures have very noticeable round eyes and sharp almost triangular shaped noses.
A stunning hand crafted piece no two are identical.
