Does it require a monthly subscription fee?

No. Unlike satellite messengers, this PLB uses the global Cospas-Sarsat satellite system which is funded by governments and is free for users. You simply need to register the device with your national authority (e.g., the UK Beacon Registry).

Does the PLB1 float?

The unit itself is waterproof but does not float on its own. However, it is supplied with a custom flotation pouch that ensures the unit will float if dropped in the water.
