Bright, tangy and a vivid crimson, sumac is one of the most versatile spices in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking — and one of our best-selling single-origin spices. Just one ingredient: 100% pure ground sumac berries, with nothing added.
What is Sumac?
Sumac is a spice made from the dried, ground berries of the Rhus coriaria shrub, which grows wild along the Mediterranean coast. It has a beautiful deep-red colour that livens up almost any dish, and it's a key ingredient in the classic Arabic seasoning za'atar.
What does Sumac taste like?
Sumac has an earthy, tangy and slightly floral flavour — similar to lemon or lime, but less sharp and bitter. It adds brightness and acidity without any added moisture, making it perfect for finishing dishes.
How to use Sumac
Sprinkle it over hummus, dips, salads, grilled meats and roasted vegetables as a colourful finishing touch — a great alternative to paprika. Sumac also works beautifully stirred into spice mixes, marinades, rubs and dressings, and it's essential for homemade za'atar.
Storage Instructions
Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat and damp.
Packaging
Supplied in eco-friendly, 100% recyclable, re-sealable pouches for long-lasting freshness. (Some larger sizes may have non-resealable packaging.)

Frequently Asked Questions
Is sumac the same as za'atar?
No — sumac is a single spice, while za'atar is a blend that uses sumac alongside herbs and sesame seeds. This is 100% pure sumac, ideal for making your own za'atar.
Is sumac spicy?
Not at all. Sumac is tangy and lemony rather than hot, so it adds brightness without any chilli heat.
Can I use sumac instead of lemon?
Yes. Sumac is a great way to add citrus-like acidity to a dish when you want flavour without extra liquid — perfect for rubs, dressings and finishing.
Is your sumac vegan?
Yes, it's suitable for both vegan and vegetarian diets, with no added sugar or salt. Please note it may contain traces of nuts, peanuts, sesame, gluten and soya.
How long does it keep?
Stored in a cool, dry place in its resealable pouch, your sumac will stay fresh and flavourful for a long time. For the best colour and aroma, use within the date on the pack.
What sizes are available?
Choose from 500g, 1kg and 5kg — ideal for home cooks through to caterers and bulk buyers.
